North Texas will be one of the venues for a statewide job fair for veterans that takes place a week before Veteran's Day.
Texas Workforce Commission [TWC], in partnership with local workforce development boards and the Texas Veterans Commission, will host hiring fairs for veterans in 31 cities throughout Texas on Thursday, Nov. 7.
Workforce Solutions for Tarrant County will host its job fair at Globe Life Park in Arlington from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The statewide event – Hiring Red, White & You! – started eight years ago. Over the years, the event has connected more than 84,153 job seekers, including 35,485 veterans and 48,668 spouses, to 14,420 employers, according to the TWC.
The Office of the Governor, the Texas Medical Center and the Texas Veterans Commission support the event.
"Hiring, Red, White & You! has made enormous strides in connecting our remarkable veterans with employment ensuring they achieve the same stability and peace of mind enjoyed by those they have fought so hard to protect," Gov. Greg Abbott said in a press release. "I encourage employers and veterans in Texas to attend a Hiring, Red, White & You! event this Nov. 7."
Although fluctuating month to month, the overall veteran unemployment rate has declined in recent years, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. From 4.6% in 2015, the overall veteran unemployment rate is currently at 3%.
“Our nation’s heroes are skilled, determined and highly sought-after workers,” said Julian Alvarez, TWC Commissioner Representing Labor. “We applaud everyone participating in this year’s Hiring Red White and You! events and those who make a point to hire veterans all year long. You’re not only employing a hero but you’re building a future for their families and communities.”
Texas has the second-highest state population of veterans in the U.S., with about 1.6 million veterans.
Workforce Solutions for Tarrant County said the Arlington job fair will be attended by more than 150 employers and have more than 4,000 job openings.
Employers who hire veterans may be eligible for the Work Opportunity Tax Credit, which allows employers to receive up to $9,600 on federal business income or payroll tax benefits when they hire from certain qualified groups of veterans.
A Hiring, Red, White & You! job fair will also take place in Wichita Falls at the Region 9 Education Service Center.
