Heim BBQ will open second restaurant at the site of the former Thurber Mingus on White Settlement.

When owners Travis and Emma Heim opened their first brick and mortar restaurant on Magnolia in early August, they already had their eye on the expansion of the brand.

On the Heim Barbecue Facebook page, Travis Heim wrote: “So…we are happy to announce that we will be opening another Heim Barbecue at 4400 White Settlement Road, in the space formerly occupied by Froggy’s and Thurber Mingus. Emma and I feel like this is a one-of-a-kind space, with a gorgeous patio right on the river, stage for live music, bigger kitchen space, and much more. It is going to take a ton of work to get the space up to our standards but we are excited to start this awesome project and serve many more people great Texas BBQ in the exciting new River District area.”

The couple opened their first restaurant with the backing of their landlords, Will Churchill and Corrie Watson, of Kent & Co. Wines next door. Churchill told me last May that Heim would be branching out, “Our plans include not only getting this first Heim Barbecue off and running, but also on expansion of the brand throughout the state in coming years.”

The quirky and rustic location, set on a lonely stretch of White Settlement Road, is sandwiched between Crestwood and the burgeoning River District development.

The concrete and cinderblock building used to be home to two dive bars, the Hare n’ Hounds Inn and later Froggy’s Boat House. Then Chef Coby Baumann dusted off the well-worn space, complete with patio and sunken lawn, for his sadly short-lived Thurber Mingus.

The site has great bones, and once Emma Heim puts her signature design touches on it, BBQ junkies will certainly feel right at home. The Heim’s lease on the space begins in April.

Nearby in the River District, Salsa Limon will open soon after moving its Streamline Moderne cafe building from the Museum District.

The area is already home to Lettuce Cook, a gourmet-on-the-go restaurant.
