Following the launch of a virtual reality component to Six Flags Over Texas' Shock Wave, the theme park will next be adding a new video game to the double-looped roller coaster.
Six Flags announced Friday that eight roller coasters around the U.S. and Canada will be outfitted with the game Rage of the Gargoyles, which allows riders to wear a headset on the ride and shoot gargoyles while "flying" through the city. Riders can play the game hands free, using head movements to aim and shoot their weapons.
Samsung developed the virtual reality technology used on the rides.
The ride will debut at Six Flags Over Texas on Sept. 24. Other rides that will incorporate Rage of the Gargoyles include Demon at Six Flags Great America near Chicago, Kong at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom near San Francisco and Goliath at La Ronde in Montreal.
Six Flags first launched its virtual reality technology in March. Shock Wave riders wear headsets that simulate flying through an alien invasion. Rage of the Gargoyles will replace the alien storyline.
Six Flags President and CEO John Duffey said in a news release that the response to the ride has been “outstanding.”
“One of the most exciting things about this technology is that we have the ability to change the storylines to offer our guests new thrills and new reasons to visit our parks,” he said.
